How to be the just-right agency for Goldilocks clients

How to be the just-right agency for Goldilocks clients

From chairs to porridge to beds, Goldilocks was one tough customer. Nothing worked right, until it did. Nothing fit, until she found the exact size she was looking for. Nothing was acceptable until it satisfied her exact, explicit needs.

She might sound like a pain, but another level Goldilocks was a young agency’s dream client, because she could articulate exactly what she didn’t want. And when she found what she was looking for, she knew it immediately, and never changed her mind again.

When you’re a small agency you worry about being the just-right agency for your potential clients. You’re the porridge shouting, “Pick me! Pick me!” (Silently of course ― porridge can’t talk.) And you’re also the chair just hoping you don’t get smashed.

Becoming the porridge that talks

But what happens as you grow is that you suddenly get a voice. (Ok, now the porridge talks!)

Just to be clear, that doesn’t mean you’re suddenly the bears, growling at Goldilocks as she bolts for the door. Instead, you’re the friend by her side as she picks her way through the furniture. You take some time to get to know her, to understand where she wants to go, and help her choose what’s really best for her.

Maybe it’s the smaller chair that’s just right, because it gets her out of her comfort zone (literally), it’s fast, agile and she needs it now. And there’ll always be time to scale up when the moment comes.

But you also might have to show Goldilocks that she’s ready for the bigger chair ― with deeper cushions, more legroom, and a higher back. One that’ll match her ambitions, and give her lots of room to grow.

The moral of the story

Growth in a communication agency ― or any service provider ― is about gaining the experience, the portfolio and the confidence to find your own voice. And helping your client discover that the just-right solution may be the one they would have never arrived at without you.

At Moskito Design we don’t eat much porridge but we love finding the just-right solutions for our clients. So come on, Goldilocks, and try one out for yourself.
